Defending champions Mumbai Indians have slipped to seventh in the points table in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. On Sunday, the Rohit Sharma-led team defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 54 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. RCB, in the meantime, got back to winning ways and managed to secure their sixth win in 10 games in the event.

Maxwell and Virat take charge

The Challengers didn’t start on a great note as Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Devdutt Padikkal for the four-ball duck. From there on, Virat Kohli and KS Bharat stitched together a partnership of 68 runs off 7.1 overs. Bharat played as handy knock of 32 before Rahul Chahar dismissed him. In the meantime, Kohli went on to notch 10,000 runs in T20 cricket and became the fifth batter to do so.

Kohli also scored 51 off 42 with three fours and as many sixes. Glenn Maxwell strained in the previous two games, but he came into his own to rack up a 37-ball 56 with six fours and three sixes. Jasprit Bumrah was a tad expensive, but he picked up three wickets. Trent Boult bowled at an economy rate of 4.25, but the Challengers got themselves up to 165 for six in their 20 overs.

Harshal Patel demolishes MI

MI started on a blistering note as they racked up 56 runs in the powerplay. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock laid the platform for the rest of the run-chase. Yuzvendra Chahal gave RCB the breakthrough, getting rid of De Kock, who made 24 at over a run-a-ball. Thereafter, the MI innings underwent a collapse as Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya perished in single digits.

In the last five overs, MI needed 67 runs at 13.40 with five wickets in hand. The onus was on Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard to take their team over the line. But Harshal Patel removed Hardik to further jolt MI. Then the pacer bowled Pollard down the leg. Patel didn’t stop and went on to take a hat-trick after getting rid of Chahar. MI were bowled out for 111 with 11 balls left in their innings.
