Delhi Capitals have got back to the spot of the points table in the 2021 Indian Premier League after spending quite some down at second. On Monday, October 4, Rishabh Pant and Co. defeated Chennai Super Kings by three wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The Super Kings, in the meantime, slumped to back-to-back losses and are in slight danger of slipping out of the top two.

Rayudu steers CSK to respectability

After being put in to bat first, the Super Kings got off to a flier as they racked up 26 runs in the first two overs, including a 16-run over from Anrich Nortje. From there on, the Capitals’ bowlers made a comeback as CSK managed only 110 runs in their last 18 overs, ending with 136 for five. Ruturaj Gaikwad got an LBW call overturned, but got out to Nortje in the penultimate over of the powerplay.

Robin Uthappa, who replaced Suresh Raina in the eleven, made a run-a-ball 19 before giving a simple caught and bowled to Ravi Ashwin. Ambati Rayudu looked in good touch as he managed an unbeaten 43-ball 55, laced with five fours and two sixes. MS Dhoni couldn’t get going and crawled to 18 at a strike rate of 66.66. Axar Patel was the standout bowler for DC as he picked up two wickets.

Hetmyer and Dhawan hold their nerve under pressure

DC started the run-chase on a positive note as Prithvi Shaw scored three fours. Deepak Chahar gave CSK some breather after he got rid of the opener in the third over. Shreyas Iyer fell cheaply to Josh Hazlewood. Rishabh Pant smashed a four and six apiece before Ravindra Jadeja sent him back. Shikhar Dhawan, at the other end, looked determined and he went on to score 39 off 35 balls.

Shardul Thakur kept CSK in hunt for a victory as he removed Dhawan and Ashwin in pretty quick succession. Bravo was introduced into the attack in the 18th over and he started with two wides and a four. He was unlucky as Krishnappa Gowtham dropped Shimron Hetmyer and the ball went for a four. Hetmyer made them pay he stayed unbeaten on 26 off 17 to take DC over the finishing line.
