IPL 2021: MS Dhoni goes past Dinesh Karthik's tally of most IPL catches as wicketkeeper

Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) legend MS Dhoni rewrote the record books in the match between CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on 26th September 2021. The 40-year-old veteran overtook Dinesh Karthik and now occupies the pole position in the list of wicketkeepers with the most catches in IPL history. Dhoni took his 116th catch in IPL cricket and surpassed Karthik, who has 115 catches to his name.

And ironically, it was Dinesh Karthik’s dismissal that allowed Dhoni to overtake the KKR wicketkeeper. Josh Hazlewood bowled a full delivery, Karthik went for the slice, the ball took the outside edge of his willow and settled into the hands of Dhoni behind the stumps.

Dhoni had also taken Venkatesh Iyer’s catch as well behind the stumps earlier in the day. To a delivery that was bowled outside the off stump, the KKR opener went for the drive and nicked the ball behind the stumps to Dhoni.

Kolkata Knight Riders post 171/6 against CSK

The Kolkata Knight Riders batted first against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and posted a total of 171/6 on the board. Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana were the main contributors with the willow for the KKR side.

While Tripathi scored an attractive 45 off 33 deliveries, Rana helped himself to a 27-ball 37. For CSK, Josh Hazlewood and Shardul Thakur scalped 2 wickets each, while Ravindra Jadeja picked up a solitary scalp. In reply, the CSK scorecard reads 154/6 after 18.3 overs at the time of writing, and the MS Dhoni-led outfit still needs 18 runs for victory.

Dhoni also heads the list of wicketkeepers with the most dismissal in IPL cricket. Apart from Dhoni and Karthik, the other 3 names that complete the list are Robin Uthappa (90 dismissals), Parthiv Patel (81 dismissals), and Wriddhiman Saha (79 dismissals).
