The third league contest in the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed action between David Warner’s Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Eoin Morgan’s Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After the former won the toss and opted to field, the game witnessed some spectacular stroke-play from Nitish Rana and Rahul Tripathi, which provided a solid platform to their team.
Having lost no more than a solitary wicket until the 15th over mark, with two set batsmen on the crease, it seemed that KKR might go onto post something colossal, only for the SRH bowlers to claw their way back in with regular wickets, which brought down the Riders from 145/1 to 160/5 soon. It was a late dash from Dinesh Karthik that led KKR to 187/6 at the close of their innings.
In response, Hyderabad was rocked early as pacer Prasidh Krishna removed David Warner soon after he was given a reprieve in the opening over of Harbhajan Singh, while Shakib al Hasan, on IPL comeback, struck on the first delivery of his spell to dismiss Wriddhiman Saha. Down and out at 10/2, SRH recovered through a 93-run stand between Jonny Bairstow and Manish Pandey, who both notched up their half-centuries.
Mohammad Nabi cops a blow on the neck
Pat Cummins struck at the end of the 13th over to remove Jonny Bairstow, which brought Mohammad Nabi at the crease. After a quiet over since his entry, Nabi decided to take on Prasidh Krishna in the 16th over, with the required run rate soaring. He managed a boundary off the third ball of the over, but Krishna came back with a nasty short delivery as a response.
As Nabi tried to pull the delivery, he failed to make any connection as the ball rose more than he anticipated. Having committed to the shot early meant that Nabi was unable to make any change later and the pace on the ball did not allow him either. The delivery struck right on his neck as he turned his head at the last moment.
Fortunately, the Afghan all-rounder escaped any serious injury as the physiotherapists came out to have the mandatory check. He was dismissed in the same over as his side eventually lost the game by 10 runs.
