Given that SRH has some young, inexperienced players, the expectation from the likes of Shankar is to carry the team alongside them once the top-order departs.

Known as one of the most consistent teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Sunrisers Hyderabad have been on a downhill in 2021, having lost four out of their first five matches, with plenty of concerns in their middle-order.

Currently seated at the second-last spot in the table, SRH’s latest loss came against the Delhi Capitals, where they dragged the contest into a Super Over but eventually ended up on the losing side. In a fragile middle-order, it came down to their talismanic overseas recruit Kane Williamson, who held one end stubbornly, and a surprising cameo from J Suchith, who came in to replace an injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar, which took the team to tie the scores.

Although, botching up another chase that should have been completed easily has led the team to face the wrath of many. Notably, SRH has complicated chases quite a few times this season as they earlier lost against Kolkata Knight Riders (10 runs), Royal Challengers Bangalore (6 runs), and Mumbai Indians (13 runs) in a similar style.

While both Jonny Bairstow and Kane Williamson have been in good touch alongside David Warner, who has not been at his best, but has still managed to contribute, the Sunrisers’ middle-order has constantly been scrutinized for its lackluster and unreliable performances.

One of the players, who has attracted criticism in plenty is Vijay Shankar, whose scores in the tournament so far read 11 (7), 3 (5), 28 (25), and 8 (7). Shankar did not bat against Punjab Kings, whom SRH handed a 9-wicket defeat. Moreover, the all-rounder has not been able to create any impact with the ball either, managing merely two wickets from five games thus far.

The Tamil Nadu player first played IPL in 2014 and has been a regular face in the league since the 2017 edition, featuring in each edition afterward. Given that SRH has some young, inexperienced players such as Virat Singh, Abhishek Sharma, and Abdul Samad in their middle-order, the expectation from the likes of Shankar is to carry the team alongside them once the top-order departs. Being unable to do that has invited quite a few reactions for the senior batsman.
