The Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in Match 21 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on April 11. With this loss, GT’s undefeated streak also came to an end as they were outplayed by the opposition even though the contest went right down to the wire.

SRH skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bowl first. Gujarat got off to a decent start but ended up losing Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan inside the powerplay. Wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade did not last long either but skipper Hardik Pandya took the matters into his own hands and took his team to a challenging total. He scored an unbeaten 50 runs off 42 deliveries. A vital 21-ball 35 by Abhinav Manohar helped Gujarat Titans post 162/7 from their 20 overs.

In reply, Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma meant business straightaway as they added 64 runs for the opening stand. Williamson scored his first half-century of the season with a fine knock of 57 runs from 46 balls whereas, Sharma chipped in with a crucial 42 runs off 32 deliveries.

Once the skipper was dismissed and Rahul Tripathi was retired hurt, it seemed as if the Gujarat bowlers would capitalize on them to stage a comeback. However, it was not to be as wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran added finishing touches with a splendid 18-ball 34.

Losing skipper, Hardik Pandya said:

“I think batting wise we were 7-10 runs short, that would have made difference in the end. We started well with the ball, but those two overs where they scored 30 runs, got them back into the game. IPL is tough so I tried to show some toughness (against Malik). That (blow to the helmet) woke me up. They bowled well and stuck to their plans, credit to them for the way they bowled. We need to learn from the mistakes, we will have a conversation and a laugh as we have our next game in a couple of days.”

Winning skipper and Player of the Match, Kane Williamson said:

” It was I thought a very good game of cricket. Probably it was a par total. They had a strong bowling attack. We wanted to get partnerships and we got that. The guys have been clear about the roles. There are a number of challenges. The execution was largely good. It was tough to hit through the line. Nice to get some partnerships and get across the line. Might just be cramps for Rahul and hopefully, he can recover quickly. Washington as well. Hopefully, he can recover quickly as well. It is just about guys going out there and trying to perform for the team. It was a nice improved performance today.”
