Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have finally got off the mark as they beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 23 runs in Match 22 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Blistering and devastating half-centuries from Shivam Dube and Robin Uthappa and a four-wicket haul from spinner Maheesh Theekshanna ensured the Men in Yellow continued its domination over the Bangalore-based franchise.

Talking about how the southern derby panned out, Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to field first. RCB made two changes as Josh Hazlewood and Suyash Prabhudessai replaced David Willey and Harshal Patel respectively. CSK kept the same playing XI from the last match as they looked for their first victory. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s dismal show in the ongoing campaign continued as the orange cap winner from last season managed just 17 runs.

He has now amassed 35 runs with an average of 7.00 in the five matches so far. Moeen Ali mustered just three runs before former RCB players Dube and Uthappa began the show.  The former slammed 95* off 46 deliveries with five fours and eight sixes while Uthappa scored 88 off 50 balls which included four fours and nine maximums.

The pair stitched the second-highest partnership of 165 runs for any wicket for CSK and also the highest third-wicket stand in IPL history as CSK raced away to a massive total of 216/4 in the 20 overs. Akash Deep was the most expensive bowler for Du Plessis’ side as he leaked 58 runs in his four-over spell. The four-time champions also registered their highest total ever against RCB. Chasing a mammoth target of 217, RCB got off to the worst possible side as they lost captain Du Plessis and Virat Kohli for just eight and one run respectively.

Glenn Maxwell scored 26 while Shahbaz Ahmed mustered 41 runs. Debutant Prabhudesai was impressive with his 18-balls 34-run knock. Dinesh Karthik kept fighting as the wicketkeeper batter struck 34 runs off just 14 balls with two fours and three sixes. Theekshana shone with the ball with the Sri Lankan spinner picking up four wickets for 33 runs in his four overs. CSK got the job done at the end to collect two points and open their account in the season. For his scintillating knock, CSK’s highest run-getter this campaign, Shivam Dube was declared the Player of the Match.
