The out-of-form Mumbai Indians (MI) locked horns with the in-form Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the 23rd game of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. It was a thrilling and entertaining contest as Punjab Kings snatched away a victory against the five-time champions, and Mumbai lost their fifth game in a row, continuing their struggle in IPL 2022.

To start off the game, Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to chase. The Mayank Agarwal-led side opened with the bat with the skipper walking to bat with Shikhar Dhawan. The two put up a 97-run stand before Agarwal was dismissed by Murugan Ashwin in the 10th over. Dhawan continued his good form as he went on to score a 50-ball 70.

Some big shots by Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan towards the end helped PBKS post a total of 198 runs at the loss of 5 wickets. Sharma added 30* runs in 15 balls while Shahrukh added 15 in 6. As for Mumbai, Basil Thampi scalped two wickets, and Jaydev Unadkat, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ashwin picked up one each.

A blistering knock by Dewald Brevis gave Mumbai some hopes of winning

Talking about the chase, Rohit Sharma started on a high note, but unfortunately had to walk off in the powerplay as Ishan Kishan followed him, too. While Rohit surpassed 10,000 T20 runs, joining Virat Kohli in the elite club, Mumbai Indians were reduced to 42/2 by the end of the powerplay. It was Dewald Brevis, fondly known as Baby AB, who cut short the asking rate for his team as he balanced out the setback that his team received.

The South African youngster and the Indian young gun Tilak Varma put up a 50+ run partnership for the third wicket, and the duo smashed seven sixes combined, five coming off the former’s bat. Brevis went on to score a 25-ball 49, falling just one run short of claiming his maiden IPL fifty. After the two, Suryakumar Yadav steered the innings for the team but was dismissed scoring 43(30).

PBKS picked up five wickets in the death overs, including three in the last over by Odean Smith, and handed Mumbai Indians their fifth defeat of the season as they continue their dry run this season.
