On the occasion of 14 successful years of the mega event, Rajasthan Royals locked horns with Kolkata Knight Riders in the 30th game of the IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. While the Royals had a winning momentum, the two-time champions KKR had faced back-to-back defeats and eyed for a redemption. It proved out to be a high-scoring thriller wherein RR just managed to secure a win.

Earlier in the game, RR displayed a top batting display as the opening batters Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal added 97 runs to their partnership before the latter walked off in the 10th over, scoring 24 (18). Buttler was on a roll from the word go. He formed a good partnership with Sanju Samson for the first wicket as the two added 67 runs as RR’s scoreboard saw a huge leap.

Buttler departed after scoring a blistering knock of 103(61), hitting nine fours and five sixes. The graph showed a downward trend after his dismissal, but RR middle-order batters kept finding the gaps to send the ball over the fence. Hetmyer’s cameo helped the team cross the 200-run mark as he took the total to a whopping 217 runs, the highest in this season by any team.

KKR come very close to a win but ended up losing by 7 runs

KKR had a change in their batting line-up as Sunil Narine opened the innings alongside Aaron Finch. Unfortunately for the two-time champions, Narine was run-out on the very first ball as skipper Shreyas Iyer joined Finch to take the game ahead. The two added 107 runs for the second wicket before Prasidh Krishna sent Finch packing for 58(28).

KKR soon lost Nitish Rana and Andre Russell as the former added 18 runs on board while the latter was dismissed for a golden duck by Ravi Ashwin. But Shreyas played the captain’s knock and had just one motto in the game- to end KKR’s losing trot. The tables turned when Yuzvendra Chahal scalped four wickets in an over conceding just two runs as he dismissed Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi, and Pat Cummins to bring up his hat-trick and a first five-wicket haul in IPL.

Thanks to Umesh Yadav’s two sixes and a boundary, KKR was able to reduce the asking rate towards the end. KKR were magnificent in their run chase but RR destructed the batting line-up in the last over when Obed McCoy picked the final two wickets to hand KKR their third defeat in a row.
