Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) dashed all the slimmest of hopes of Mumbai Indians (MI) to qualify for the playoffs as the 2021 season finalists defeated the five-time champions MI by 52 runs in Match 56 of IPL 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Jasprit Bumrah was the star performer as the lethal pacer took 5/10 in his four-over spell to script his best ever bowling figures in the IPL and restrict KKR to a total of 165/9 in 20 overs. Defending the target, KKR’s Pat Cummins snared three scalps for just 22 runs to seal the fifth victory for his side this season.

Speaking about how the encounter unfolded, Rohit Sharma won the toss, and MI elected to field first. They made one change with injured Suryakumar Yadav, who is ruled out of the tournament, making way for Ramandeep Singh. KKR made a wholesale of five changes with Venkatesh Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Sheldon Jackson, Pat Cummins, and Varun Chakaravarthy coming into the side for Aaron Finch, Baba Indrajith, Anukul Roy, Shivam Mavi, and Harshit Rana respectively.

Venkatesh finally struck form, scoring 43 runs off just 24 deliveries with three fours and four maximums. Rahane made 25 runs while Nitish Rana amassed 43 runs off 26 deliveries. Captain Shreyas Iyer and big-hitter Andre Russell managed to score only six and nine runs respectively while Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 23 runs to take his side to a score of over 160 runs. Bumrah dismantled the Knight Riders with his five-wicket haul, which also included a triple-wicket maiden over.

Chasing 166 to win, Rohit’s disastrous campaign extended as he got dismissed for just two runs off the bowling of Tim Southee in the first over. Ishan Kishan racked up 51 runs off 43 deliveries with Tilak Varma scoring only six runs. Pat Cummins picked up three wickets in an over, which included well-settled Kishan’s wicket as MI’s innings collapsed.

Kieron Pollard failed yet again as he got out for 15 runs with his side getting bundled out for just 113 runs in 17.3 overs. KKR with ten points occupy the seventh spot in the table while MI remain at the bottom with just four points. For his five-for, Jasprit Bumrah, though he ended up on the losing side still managed to grab the Player of the Match award.
