The Royal Challengers Bangalore and Punjab Kings squared off in the 60th match of the IPL 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai in hopes of reserving a playoff berth. Both teams were looking at getting those important points on the points table in order to stay in contention for winning the title, but it was PBKS who took a leap forward, winning the game by 54 runs.

The start of the innings was fiery, with Jonny Bairstow taking the lead and ruling the game from the word go. After poor outings in his initial games, he was at his best in the top order with a 29-ball 66. Shikhar Dhawan (21 off 15) was unable to stay for long as Glenn Maxwell broke the opening partnership. His wicket was the only one that RCB could get in the powerplay as PBKS ended their powerplay with 83/1 on the board.

After Dhawan’s dismissal, Rajapaksa (1 off 3) was dismissed early into his game courtesy of Wanindu Hasaranga. After Shahbaz Ahmed scalped Bairstow, it was Liam Livingstone (70 off 42) who wreaked havoc in the middle and death overs. The bowlers had a difficult day, notably Hazlewood, who was thrashed for 64 runs in four overs. The numbers of Hasaranga and Harshal stood out, but the rest of the team received a hammering as PBKS ended the inning at 209/9.

Coming into the chase, openers Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli gave a kick-start to the inning, scoring quick 31 runs in three overs at an amazing run rate with the latter taking charge. But Kagiso Rabada opened his attack by scalping Kohli (20 off 14) in the fourth over. Rishi Dhawan provided no time for RCB to sulk into their emotions from the early blow as he picked Du Plessis (10 off 8) and followed it with Mahipal Lomror’s wicket (6 off 3).

Losing three important wickets in the powerplay, Rajat Patidar (26 off 21) and Maxwell (35 off 22) steadied the innings for their side, giving hopes of staying in contention. But their destructive plan came to an end when the PBKS bowlers worked their magic. After a terrific performance by the PBKS batters, the bowlers fulfilled their duties to perfection as they dished out the RCB batting unit, restricting them from the chase. PBKS acquired a big win, boosting their net run rate, as they defeated RCB by 54 runs.
