The penultimate match of the IPL 2022 league state featured the Delhi Capitals and the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. It was a much-needed victory for DC in order to qualify for the playoffs, but Mumbai Indians put curtains on their campaign as they bagged a victory by five wickets in their final game of the season.

MI’s seamers were spot on from the start, pinning the Capitals to the ground with three wickets in the Powerplay. David Warner (5 off 6) lost his wicket to Daniel Sams before Jasprit Bumrah took the challenge and scalped two biggies. The speedster went on to scalp the struggling Prithvi Shaw for a 23-ball 24 and the deadly Mitchell Marsh for a golden duck.

Sarfaraz Khan (10 off 7) appeared to be in terrific form, but Mayank Markande’s brilliant delivery saw him go, leaving Rishabh Pant and his team in the dark. MI kept the DC captain on a leash with tight bowling, but it was Rovman Powell who took a stroll on Hrithik Shokeen as the revival began. Rishabh Pant (39 off 33) punished Ramandeep Singh for multiple boundaries, but the latter had the last laugh. Powell (43 off 34) was then dismissed by Bumrah who planned his wicket with a perfect yorker. DC ended the game scoring 159/7.

MI’s victory leads to Bangalore’s playoff qualification

Coming to the chase, Khaleel Ahmed made it difficult to hit runs in the first over, but Ishan Kishan started off with a bang by punishing Anrich Nortje for 14 runs in the second over. While Kishan continued to find the gaps and place the ball perfectly, skipper Rohit Sharma (2 off 13) had a miserable time on the field yet again as Shardul Thakur showed him the way back to the pavilion. Sharma completed his 2022 campaign without scoring a single half-century for the first time in the history of IPL.

Dewald Brevis and Kishan steadied the innings after the early blow and shared an amazing 51-runs partnership. The duo went bonkers during Kuldeep Yadav’s spell as they hit him for 18 runs in the 10th over. But Yadav saved the game by scalping Kishan (48 off 35) as the opening batter fell short of just two runs to get a deserving half-century. Soon, Thakur struck for the second time to dish out Brevis (37 off 33). Tim David (34 off 11) wreaked havoc on the field and cut short the chase drastically before walking off.

The game came down to Mumbai needing five runs off the final over, with the fans of two franchises rooting for MI. The five-time champions emerged victorious as they won the nail-biting thriller by five wickets with five balls to spare, thereby pushing the Royal Challengers Bangalore into the playoffs.
