The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to introduce two new teams from the next edition. The arrival of the two new franchises will witness the mega auction wherein all the teams will have to rebuild their sides. However, it is also to be noted that the teams wouldn’t need to build things from scratch.

All the existing teams are allowed to retain a maximum of four players by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The board has set November 30 as the deadline for the franchises to announce their retained and released players.

Here are the retention rules for the IPL 2022 mega auction:

Ahead of the mega auction, the eight teams can retain a maximum of four players. The four players can be either two Indians and two overseas players or three Indian and one overseas. However, the franchises have been given the freedom to retain one, two, three, or four players depending upon their requirements.

The BCCI has also laid rules for the same for the new IPL teams. The new entries have been provided the freedom to pick three players outside the IPL 2022 Mega Auction. They can choose two Indian cricketers and one overseas cricketer outside the mega auction that is from the players that the other eight franchises released.

The classification of the salary of the retained players is as follows:

4 players: INR 42 crores (16cr, 12cr, 8cr, and 6cr)

3 players: 33 crores (15cr, 11cr, and 7cr)

2 players: 22 crores (14cr and 10cr)

1 player: 14 crores (14cr if capped and 4cr if uncapped)

IPL 2022 mega auction Purse usage:

The BCCI has increased the total purse value of the franchises as compared to the last auction. Previously the franchises had a purse value of INR 85 Crores. However, now it has been increased by 5 crores and thus they will have a purse of INR 90 Crores heading into the mega auction.

As the franchises will retain players for the next seasons, their salaries will be detected from the franchises’ purse. Thus, the owners will have to be careful in their decisions.

Here is how the purse will be affected by the retention of players:

No Retentions- INR 90 Crores

One Retention- INR 76 Crores

Two Retentions- INR 66 Crores

Three Retentions- INR 57 Crores

Four Retentions- INR 48 Crores
