Two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) completed a resounding victory over Mumbai Indians (MI) in a group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune on April 6 (Wednesday). The five-time champions had no answers for the clinical Knight Riders, as MI lost their third straight match in the tournament.

Winning the toss, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to have a bowl first. KKR tasted some immediate success, as MI skipper Rohit Sharma was sent packing in the third over of the match. Young Dewald Brevis (29 off 19 balls) showed some glimpses of his talent. However, he too got out after the field restrictions, with MI 45/2 in 7.5 overs.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan (14 off 21) soon followed the suit, as he was sent back to pavilion by Australian pacer Pat Cummins. The five-time champions were in big trouble at 55/3 in 11 overs. However, Suryakumar Yadav (52 off 36 balls) and young sensation Tilak Varma (38 off 27 balls) were the saviours for MI, as the five-time champions went on to score 161/4 in their 20 overs.

For KKR, pacer Umesh Yadav was yet again the pick of the bowlers, scalping the big wicket of skipper Rohit Sharma and giving away only 25 runs in his four-over quota. Cummins and Varun Chakravarthy were also amongst the wickets, but they leaked too many runs.

KKR had a poor start to their chase

Chasing a target of 162, KKR had a very poor start as they were 35/2 after the end of field restrictions. Opener Venkatesh Iyer and Sam Billings provided some stability in their chase, but Billings got out after making 17 runs off just 12 balls.  Nitish Rana (8 off 7 balls) and Andre Russell (11 off 5 balls) were also sent to the dugout soon.

With 61 runs to get in 41 balls, Venkatesh was joined by Cummins and the duo made a mockery of MI’s total. Cummins in particular was ruthless in his innings, the 28-year old hammered 56 runs off just 15 balls, smashing four fours and six maximums while having a mind-boggling strike rate of 373.33. Venkatesh, on the other hand, was quite handy too, the left-handed batter scored 50 off 41 balls.

For Mumbai, Murugan Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers scalping two crucial wickets. English pacer Tymal Mills also grabbed two wickets. However, barring Basil Thampi, all MI bowlers were quite expensive.
