Punjab Kings (PBKS) managed to haul the five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in a group stage match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) stadium in Pune on April 13 (Wednesday). Chasing a target of 199 runs, the Men in Blue could manage 186/9 in their 20 overs.

After losing the toss, Punjab started the innings with a bang, as both openers got to their half-centuries in no time. Dhawan, in particular, was quite aggressive, while skipper Agarwal played attractive strokes to get the scoreboard going. They added 97 runs for the first wicket in less than 10 overs. However, MI bowlers managed to pull things back with quick wickets, especially of dangerous batters Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow.

However, wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma (30 off 15 balls) and Dhawan were going strong for PBKS. After the fall of Dhawan, Shahrukh Khan provided some impetus as PBKS finished 198/5 in their 20 overs. Senior pacer Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers for MI, as he gave away only 28 runs and picked a crucial wicket of Livingstone.

Mumbai Indians suffer a fifth consecutive defeat

Chasing 199, MI were cruising at one stage with youngsters Tilak Varma and Dewald Brevis taking on the opposition bowlers in the middle. However, two run outs led to the end of Pollard and Varma, which meant that Punjab crossed the winning line despite a Suryakumar scare towards the end.

West Indies all-rounder Odean Smith, who was backed by the PBKS franchise even after his horrible show with the ball in the previous match, scalped four wickets for his side in just three overs.

The five-time champions are yet to win a match in IPL 2022. Meanwhile, PBKS have made it to the top-four in the points table. Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants are other three teams in the top four.
