It was a low-scoring thriller in the Indian Premier League (IPL) between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy, Mumbai. Chasing a target of 129 runs, RCB almost choked. However, with the help of some lusty blows from Harshal Patel and Dinesh Karthik, RCB went on to win the contest by three wickets with four balls remaining.

Winning the toss, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis invited KKR to have a bat first. The decision proved to be right as KKR lost three of their top-order batters within the field restrictions period. Despite making runs at a steady pace, KKR were reduced to 44/3 in six overs with Ajinkya Rahane, Venkatesh Iyer, and Nitish Rana perishing.

The two-time champions would have liked their new skipper Shreyas Iyer to play a captain’s knock. However, Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga got the better of him as Iyer departed after making 13 runs off just 10 balls. Things got worse for the ‘men in purple’ as they were reduced to 83/7 in just 11.4 overs.

KKR ace all-rounder Andre Russell did try to get a decent score for his side. However, he too perished after making 25 runs off 18 balls, hitting three sixes and one four in his short innings. Much to everyone’s surprise, tailender Umesh Yadav (18 runs off 12 balls) and Varun Chakaravarthy (10 runs off 18 balls) showed some resistance as KKR crawled to a score of 128 before getting bowled out in 18.5 overs.

For RCB, Hasaranga was the pick of the bowlers, scalping four wickets and giving away only 20 runs in his four-over quota. Pacer Akash Deep also picked three wickets for his side.

RCB had the worst possible start in their chase

Chasing 129 to victory, the Red Army lost their first wicket with only one run on the board. However, real damage was done when both skipper Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli were out off successive deliveries, leaving RCB at 17/3 in 2.1 overs. Just like the previous match, Umesh Yadav was proving to be unplayable with the new ball, as he removed Kohli and opener Anuj Rawat. Pacer Tim Southee took the prized wicket of Faf du Plessis.

Reeling at 17/3, RCB were in desperate need of a partnership and David Willey and Shefane Rutherford provided one. Both left-handed batters stitched a partnership of 45 runs to take RCB to 62/3 before Willey was scalped by Sunil Narine.

After the fall of Willey, Shahbaz Ahmed came to the crease and gave the much required impetus to the RCB innings. The left-hander made 27 runs off just 20 balls, hitting three maximums before he was outdone by Chakaravarthy. Set batter, Rutherford (28 runs off 40 balls) soon followed, leaving RCB at 107/6.

The job was left for Dinesh Karthik and pacer Harshal Patel and they did not disappoint. Patel hit two crucial boundaries off Venkatesh Iyer in the penultimate over and Karthik finished the job off the first two balls of the last over. As a result, the Red Army managed to get two important points and open their account in the points table.
