IPL: 5 Instances when a batter should've got retired out

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been setting the bar for many tournaments over the world. It is well known for the highest level of platform it provides. The best part of IPL is that it not only propels the bench strength of the Indian team, but it also helps other teams. While the players are competing for a place in the squad, there is one guy, Ravi Ashwin, who has been the most intelligent one. We all have seen how the street smart cricketer has managed to outfox batsmen on several occasions. This time, he has been able to bring another rule under the spotlight in favor of the Rajasthan Royals. Even though Ashwin was batting decently, he knew that there were several prolific hitters down the line-up. Keeping aside all the expectations from the fans that he might be a bit slow while slogging, he opted to get out under the “Retired out” rule. This move by him impressed the fans. But, we have seen several occasions where the batsman could have simply retired out instead of eating up the balls. Here are five instances when a batter should’ve got retired out in IPL: 5. After coming second in the inaugural edition and fourth in the second season, they went on to win the third edition. But, their path to success was a bit tricky. In a few matches, they were playing way below their potential. And one of the instances was during their match against Punjab. While batting first, Punjab scored 136 runs in 20 overs. It was looking like an easy chase for the Super Kings. But, the story that followed was nothing short of a disappointment for CSK fans. Patel, the opener, scored 57 runs in 58 balls. As he ate up almost half of the innings, it was a difficult task for the rest of the batting line-up. Safe to say, if he would have got retired out, CSK would have finished the game off easily. With names like Suresh Raina, Vijay, Badrinath, Albie, and Gony, 136 was not a huge score for CSK. 4. JP Duminy: 59 from 63 balls, IPL 2009 MI vs KXIP JP Duminy. The southpaw was a spectacular performer in the limited-overs format. He was a talented all-rounder who can contribute to every aspect of the game. However, he was a part of a struggling MI squad in 2009. Even though it had some big names, it failed when it came to the execution of the plans. Against Punjab, in a league game, MI did a great job by restricting them to 119 runs. But, the Punjab bowlers had other plans. Thanks to Duminy, MI was restricted to just 116 runs in 20 overs. It was a horrible outing for the South African. With Dwayne Bravo, Abhishek Nayar, and Saurabh Tiwary waiting for their turns, Duminy could’ve retired out and helped the other batters have a go. 3. They went on to win their second IPL title in three years. In the final, they were up against a strong CSK squad. While batting first, MI went on to score 203 runs in 20 overs. As CSK had a strong batting line-up, everyone was expecting them to give MI a tough time. But things turned haywire as Smith was too slow with his approach. 57 runs from 48 balls with 203 runs to chase was way below average from the swashbuckling all-rounder. CSK could have won the match if players like Raina, MS Dhoni, Bravo, Ravindra Jadeja, and Faf du Plessis could have secured some balls to contribute. Smith’s poor outing meant that he never made it to the squad in 2018. His from dipped as well post the 2015 season. 2. MS Dhoni: 18 from 27 balls, IPL 2021 CSK vs DC MS Dhoni. While the 2020 season was a disastrous one for the legend, in the next season, he performed only in one match. In league stages, it was all about the top order for CSK. During their league game against DC, CSK was unable to put up a big score on the board. One of the main reasons was Dhoni’s struggle with the bat. He scored 18 runs from 27 balls without any boundaries. His struggle came to an end when he was caught behind off Avesh Khan. It was clear that Dhoni is now in the twilight of his career. With some big names like Jadeja, Bravo, and Shardul waiting for their turn, Dhoni’s approach was somehow a bit slow. 1. Steve Smith: 51 from 50 balls, IPL 2017 Final RPS vs MI Steve Smith. The 2017 IPL final was a nightmare for every Pune fan and they might never forget it, given how they had bottled a low-scoring chase. With a modest target of 130, they fell short by just one run. Pune was the best team in the tournament, with orthodox players firing on all cylinders, everyone was surprised by their performances. But, they started the chase with a bit of a shock. Rahul Tripathi was out for just 3 runs. However, Rahane and Smith steadied the ship. As Rahane was caught for 44 runs, the onus was on Smith to finish off the game. But, his score of 51 from 50 balls was way too slow for any chase. This meant that Dhoni, Tiwary, and Dan Christian were under immense pressure. There is no doubt that the result would have been different if Smith would have gotten out or got retired out early.
