Glenn Maxwell is among one of the highest-paid players in the IPL. In the 2021 edition, he is representing the Royal Challengers Bangalore and this is his fourth IPL franchise. In a recent interaction, the Australian all-rounder explained how the IPL has helped him to get better recognition and also become a better player.

Maxwell first appeared in the IPL for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) in the 2012 edition. He moved to Mumbai Indians for the 2013 season and then shifted to Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings). At Punjab, he had his most successful stint as a player. Maxwell was among the leading run-getters of the 2014 season and also helped Punjab to the final.

However, since then, his IPL performances haven’t been as effective as his T20I success. But, Maxwell admitted that it was the 2014 season that helped him to make a name for himself in Australia. He revealed that people had started considering him as a sub-continent specialist when he performed well. The Aussie star also noted that after that season he got more chances for Australia. He credited IPL to have given him that opportunity and platform.

I got a bit pigeon-holed in Australia over being a sub-continent specialist

“I have been a massive beneficiary of the IPL. It certainly fast-tracked my international T20 career, I have been able to experience the Indian conditions, we had an IPL in Dubai in 2014 and I was able to perform really well over there. After that, I got a bit pigeon-holed in Australia over being a sub-continent specialist.

“It got me a few ODIs and Test tours which I probably would not have been able to do so if not for the IPL,” Maxwell said in a video posted on the official Twitter handle of RCB.

Furthermore, the Australian said that the IPL gives an opportunity to young players to interact with senior pros. He revealed that during his stint at Mumbai Indians, he got to learn a lot of things about batting from the Indian batting legend, Sachin Tendulkar. He also shared that he has a good relationship with Yuzvendra Chahal, who has now become his teammate again. The two had previously been together with Mumbai Indians during the 2013 season.
