The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the biggest and the richest cricket league in the world by a fair distance. The cricket’s biggest extravaganza has changed lives of hundreds of crickets by offering them big contracts. The T20 league has handed over contracts to 694 players in the 11 seasons of its existence. Two of those have earned over 100 crore rupees from IPL over the years.

Finances dwarfed by Big Time College Sports

IPL has brought a lot of money to the game, which is outrageous when compared to other cricket leagues in the world. These financial figures are phenomenal in this particular sport, but they seem peanuts when compared to the other sporting leagues. Surprisingly, Big Time College Sports in the United States of America has earned revenues which are a lot higher than the IPL. The sports league in the USA is a big money business and the schools participating in the league earn an incredible amount of money.

According to a report by Insidesport, 27 schools participating in the Big Time College Sports earned more than 100 million dollars in the last year. If we don’t calculate the money earned through TV rights, none of the 8 IPL franchises come close to matching this figure. This means that there are 27 schools which earn more than any franchise participating in the cricket’s biggest league.

The University of Texas collected highest revenues in the last year. The university earned 182.1 million dollars from sports.

IPL has a long way to go

While we know IPL is the richest cricket league in the world, but the fact that revenues earned by Universities dwarf revenues of franchises of cricket’s biggest league show that there is a need to spread the game. IPL has made the game and the players richer, as they have earned 4284 crores from the league in the 11 editions, but it still has a long way to go to match these global leagues.
