Kolkata Knight Riders, on Sunday, beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 10 runs in the third game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 to start their season on a winning note. Chasing 188, SRH put up a good fight thanks to fifties from Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow but eventually fell short as they finished on 177 for 5.

SRH’s chase got off to a disastrous start as their openers – David Warner and Wriddhiman Saha – departed with just 10 runs on the board. Prasidh Krishna gave KKR the first breakthrough when he sent back Warner for 3 in the second over. The Hyderabad-based franchise were yet to add a run after Warner’s dismissal when Shakib Al Hasan castled Saha for 7 in the next over.

Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow then stopped the rot and revived SRH’s chase by sharing 92 runs for the third wicket. Pat Cummins gave KKR the much-needed breakthrough by dismissing Bairstow for 55. The wicket proved decisive as the likes of Mohammad Nabi and Vijay Shankar failed to deliver. Pandey went on to complete his fifty but it was not enough for his team to cross the finishing line.

DC continue to stay on top

Earlier in the game, KKR finished their innings on 187 for 6 thanks to fifties from Nitish Rana (80) and Rahul Tripathi (53) as well as a fine cameo from former captain Dinesh Karthik. Asked to bat first, KKR were off to a good start as Rana and Shubman Gill added 53 runs for the first wicket before Rashid Khan dismissed the latter.

It was followed by another good partnership between Rana and Tripathi as the duo added 93 runs for the second wicket. T Natarajan broke the stand when he dismissed Tripathi. 11 runs later, Rashid took the important wicket for Andre Russell to peg KKR back. 3 runs later, Mohammad Nabi dismissed Rana and Eoin Morgan on successive deliveries to leave KKR reeling at 160 for 5 in the 18th over.

But just when it looked like SRH would manage to restrict KKR to less than 180, Karthik launched a fine assault to take his team to the big total. The wicketkeeper-batsman slammed an unbeaten 22 off just 9 balls with the help of two fours and a six. For SRH, Rashid and Nabi picked up two wickets each.
