Young Arshdeep Singh defended 13 runs in the final over as Punjab Kings beat Rajasthan Royals by 4 runs in the fourth game of IPL 2021 to start their campaign on a winning note. RR skipper Sanju Samson scored a brilliant century but could not score the 5 runs on the final ball of the match as his heroic effort went in vain.
Chasing an improbable 222, RR were off to a disastrous start as their star man Ben Stokes departed in the very first over even without opening his account. Manan Vohra started on a promising note and hit a four and a six but he too did not last long as Arshdeep Singh dismissed him to leave RR reeling at 25 for 2. Samson and Jos Buttler then steadied the ship with a 45-run stand.
The likes of Shivam Dube (23) and Riyan Parag (25) got the starts but failed to convert them. Samson, however, remained firm at one end and kept RR in contention by scoring runs at a good pace. He reached his century with a four off 54 balls in the 18th over. The equation was finally down to 21 off 12 balls.
RR suffered another setback on the first ball of the 19th over Riley Meredith dismissed Rahul Tewatia. They managed to score 8 runs off the over, thus bringing down the equation to 13 from the final over. Samson and Chris Morris, however, could only collect 6 as RR finished on 217 for 7.
Points table:
Earlier in the game, PBKS piled up a massive total of 221 for 5 thanks to stunning knocks from their skipper KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda. The Punjab-based outfit were off to a poor start as Mayank Agarwal departed cheaply before Rahul and Chris Gayle steadied the ship with a 67-run stand. It was followed by a whirlwind fifty from Hooda.
The right-handed batsman slammed 4 boundaries and 6 sixes to score 64 off just 28 balls. He added 105 runs with Rahul before being sent back by Chris Morris. Nicholas Pooran failed to deliver with the bat but Rahul stayed till the last over to ensure his team posts a big total. The PBKS skipper was out on the second ball of the final over after scoring 91 off 50 balls with the help of 7 fours and 5 sixes. For RR, debutant Chetan Sakariya was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3 for 31.
