IRE vs IND: Virender Sehwag wants one player to be dropped to accomodate KL Rahul

The two-match T20 International series between India and Ireland is all set to get underway on Wednesday in Dublin at the Village. The visitors will be starting a whole new season after plying their trade in the Indian Premier League (IPL) back home.

The tournament saw the resurgence of KL Rahul who managed to earn a recall in the national squad across all the three formats. However, Virender Sehwag believes that he should get a chance in the playing XI in the series against Ireland.

Virat Kohli will have to take some tough decisions while picking the best XI for the first match as all the 15 players are fit and available for selection. He himself will slot in at number 3 or 4 in the lineup after missing the Nidahas Trophy in March even as Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan will be preferred as openers. This situation leaves the place of Rahul in jeopardy as he also opens the innings more often than not.

Who should be dropped?

Virender Sehwag, while speaking to India TV, split the beans on the batting order of Team India for the T20I series against Ireland. He felt that Rahul should bat at number 3 and Dinesh Karthik should be dropped. “India should open with Rohit and Shikhar, KL Rahul should come at No.3 with Virat Kohli at No.4. MS should come after Kohli. Rahul should play in place of Dinesh Karthik as I believe, he can provide depth in batting while playing at No.3,” he said.

However, dropping Karthik would be unfair to him as he won the Nidahas Trophy for the Men in Blue a few months ago. His blitz of 29 runs off 8 deliveries helped India defeat Bangladesh in the title clash and life the trophy. Moreover, he continued in the same vein in the IPL which followed and has sealed his place in the side as the finisher. Now it remains to be seen if the team management decides to bench Rahul for the first game despite being in scintillating form.
