Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni share a strong bond on and off the field. Although the former made his debut under the Rahul Dravid’s captaincy, he played a majority of his international cricket under veteran wicketkeeper. Surprisingly, they also play together for Chennai Super Kings since its inaugural season. In a freewheeling conversation with Indian commentator Aakash Chopra, Raina threw light over his bond with Dhoni.
The 33-year-old batsman partnered Dhoni on many occasions and helped team India win many crucial games. The southpaw was given the same role in the middle order of Chennai Super Kings as well. Moreover, he churned out a lot of success in that specific role. Raina is known as the Mr IPL for his exceptional and consistent show in the league. He is also the second-highest run-getter in the cash-rich league.
I am proud that I became a better person under MS Dhoni, says Suresh Raina
Meanwhile, one thing cannot be ignored that MS Dhoni played an important role in Suresh Raina’s evolution as a good middle-order batsman. Talking about the same, the left-handed batsman said that when he looks behind, he feels that destiny wanted him and Dhoni to play for CSK. He added that the 38-year-old always have a solution to any problem on and off the field.
MS Dhoni has always given Raina good advice throughout his cricketing career and the latter is proud that he played under him. “I think it was destiny for MS and me to play in one place (CSK). The love from people there, it didn’t seem different. We kept performing and people adopted us as their own. His presence of mind and positive attitude is great, he has the answers to all questions.
“He has never told me what to do, he has only advised me and changed my mindset a lot. Everyone plays cricket, but I am proud that I became a better person while being with him,” Suresh Raina said.
In March, before nationwide lockdown, ‘Chinna Thala’ was seen batting alongside Dhoni during a practice game for CSK. The aforementioned duo was all set to rock the cricket field once again with their batting. However, BCCI suspended the tournament for an indefinite period amid COVID-19 pandemic.
