In an otherwise dismal show from Australia in the third Test against India, Pat Cummins was the lone exception. The fast bowler impressed with both bat and ball to give his compatriots something to cheer about. In the first innings, he was the only bowler to pick up wickets on Day one as the hosts managed to take just two wickets in the entire day.

And when they ended up conceding a mammoth 298-run lead after being bowled out for just 151, it was Cummins who revived their slim hopes by starring with the ball. The right-arm pacer destroyed India’s top order, dismissing the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli for a duck, to end with career-best figures of 6/33. But the damage was already done in the first innings as despite suffering a collapse in the second innings, India ended up setting an improbable 399-run target.

He then went on to impress with the bat. Australia were looking primed to suffer a crushing loss after losing 5 wickets for just 135. However, Cummins came up with a career-best effort once again, scoring 63 to frustrate the visitors and take the game to the final day. And while his heroic effort went in vain, he received praise from all over. In fact, legendary spinner Shane Warne went on to say that Cummins evokes captaincy material.

Not a captaincy material

Pat Cummins, however, does not think he can lead the side and rubbished talks of his elevation as the future Test skipper. He also lavished praise on current skipper Tim Paine, saying that the wicketkeeper-batsman is doing a “brilliant job”.

“I think it’s pretty ridiculous at the moment,” Cummins was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au. “We’ve obviously got ‘Painey’ (Tim Paine) at the moment who is doing a brilliant job and I think it’s his for a long time now.” Cummins further said he is more focussed on improving his individual game at the moment.

“I feel like I’m too busy in the game bowling and when I’m batting putting all my effort into that. And when I’m not doing it I’m usually off with the fairies trying to recover. So, I don’t think I would make a very good captain at the moment,” he added.
