Just hours after his Instagram post caused a stir in the cricketing fraternity, Australian all-rounder James Faulkner has denied being in a same-sex relationship. Faulkner, on Monday, celebrated his 29th birthday. Later, he had taken to Instagram to post a picture of him sitting alongside his mother and another male friend. And it was the choice of words in his caption that made many believe that Faulkner was gay.
Faulkner had referred his friend Rob Jubb as ‘the boyfriend’ while adding the hashtag #togetherfor5years. Unsurprisingly, the post caused a furore among the cricket fans as they thought Faulkner used the occasion to announce that he was gay. However, before the matter could get out of hand, he took to social media once again to play down the speculations. The World Cup-winning star denied being the first Australian professional cricketer to reveal publicly that he’s in a same-sex relationship.
Faulkner later edited the post to add “(best mate!!!)” in reference to Jubb. He then posted another message where he thanked everyone for the support following the misunderstanding and also confirmed that he is not gay.
“There seems to be a misunderstanding about my post from last night, I am not gay, however, it has been fantastic to see the support from and for the LBGT community. Let’s never forget love is love, however, @robjubbsta is just a great friend. Last night marked five years of being housemates! Good on everyone for being so supportive,” wrote James Faulkner.
Statement from Cricket Australia
Cricket Australia also issued a public statement, apologising for the misunderstanding that was caused by the post. “Cricket Australia does not consider the social commentary this morning from James Faulkner to be a joke, nor does James,” said CA spokesperson Karina Keisler.
“His comment was made as a genuine reflection of his relationship with his business partner, best friend and housemate of five years. He was not contacted for clarification before some outlets reported his Instagram post as an announcement of a homosexual relationship.
“James and CA are supportive of the LGBQTI community and recognises coming out can be an incredibly emotional time. The post was not in any way meant to make light of this and, though the support from the community was overwhelming and positive. Cricket Australia apologises for any unintended offence,” added Karina.
