Jasprit Bumrah made his Test debut just around a year ago amid a lot of apprehensions over his ability with the red-ball. A potent force in limited-overs cricket, Bumrah’s quality in Tests was still unknown. But the apprehensions soon dissipated as he starred with the ball in his debut series in South Africa, picking up 14 wickets in three Tests.

A few months later, he was in England and did brilliantly once again as he replicated his South Africa performance. The Gujarat star missed the first two games due to injury but hit the ground running on his comeback and ended the series with 14 wickets in three games including a five-wicket haul.

By the time he landed in Australia for the ongoing series, he was already regarded as one of the best Test bowlers. And Bumrah has further enhanced his reputation with a breathtaking display. In the first two Tests, he picked up eleven wickets. On Friday, he ran riot with the ball, picking up a career-best 6 for 33 to blow the hosts away.

His stunning spell helped India bowl Australia out for just 151 and take a massive 292-run lead. He opened his account by dismissing Marcus Harris before sending back Shaun Marsh with a gem of a delivery. The 25-year old then found the gap between bat and pad to shatter Travis Head’s stumps before making Tim Paine edge one to the wicketkeeper. He went on to dismiss Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood to wrap up the Australian innings and put India in the driver’s seat.

Record alert:

Bumrah’s latest exploits with the ball have helped him become the first Asian bowler to take a 5-fer in Australia, England and South Africa in the same calendar year. In the same innings, he also broke a 39-year-old Indian record with the wicket of Shaun Marsh by taking 41 wickets (then) in his debut year in Test cricket. He surpassed Dileep Doshi’s record of 40 wickets in his debut year in Tests in 1979.
