Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler expected to take pay cut upto INR 1.86 crore each amid the Coronavirus shutdown

The wrath of Coronavirus has put the world at a halt and the pandemic has wreaked havoc across the globe since its initiation. The pandemic has infected over 6 lakh individual around the world and more than 30,000 people have died after being infected by the novel coronavirus. The spread of the virus has compelled everyone to abide by the lockdown and stay indoors as a precaution against the life-threatening virus.

Furthermore, the global sporting scenario has also come to a standstill by the outbreak of the virus. The coronavirus outbreak has not spared any sporting extravaganza as Every major sporting event has either been postponed or cancelled in the wake of the pandemic. England’s tour of Sri Lanka was cancelled earlier this month and the ECB announced no professional cricket will be played until the end of May.

Moreover, England’s home Test series against West Indies and Pakistan and limited-overs series against Australia are also in jeopardy due to the current global situation. If the situation does not improve, the series might be called off or postponed, leading a further loss of the revenue.

Professional cricket in England has been put to a halt

“We’re looking at everything about how the game can make savings,” an ECB spokesman was quoted as saying by The Times.

“There’s a formal process to go through with centrally contracted players but the game needs to pull together at this time. We believe the players realise the bigger picture,” added the source.

The financial situation of major cricket boards has also taken a toll due to absence of cricketing activity around the globe. Amid this stern situation, professional cricket in England has been put at a halt and ECB players are reportedly going to face pay cut for the next three months till the shutdown ends.

Meanwhile, England players who are on central contracts have their salaries paid in full by the ECB, who had awarded 10 Test contracts and a dozen white-ball contracts in September 2019. The Times also reported that three prominent faces of England cricket– Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler– are expected to take pay cuts of approximately 200,000 pounds ($249,040) during the three-month shutdown.
