English batsman Alastair Cook recently bid adieu to international cricket after his career spanned 12 long years. He made his debut in a Test match against India back in 2006 in Nagpur and made an immediate impact, first with a half-century and then with his maiden century, all in the same match. The Gloucester-born cricketer has grown leaps and bounds in stature ever since and hasn’t looked back.

He has weaved his magic in 160 Tests in which he has notched 12,254 runs at a decent average of 44.88. However, the last one year hasn’t been memorable for Cook by any stretch of the imagination. He scored a brilliant 244 against Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, but apart from that he hasn’t been able to replicate the performances, he is known for dishing out on a consistent basis.

Bairstow all praise for Cook

The left-hander is currently playing in England’s five-match Test series against India and Cook has flattered to deceive thus far. On six out of seven occasions, he has breached the double-figure, but on no occasion has he been able to convert them. The cricketer will now play the final Test at Kennington Oval in London after which he will bow out of cricket at the highest level.

The English team and his ardent supporters would now wish for him to score big in the last Test and bid adieu to the longest on a high. After his retirement, the entire cricketing fraternity poured him with wishes. Jonny Bairstow, England’s wicketkeeper-batsman, expressed his gratitude for playing alongside the legendary cricketer and congratulated him for a stupendous career.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “A true legend who set the benchmark on and off the pitch. It’s been an honour playing alongside you. Congratulations on a stellar @englandcricket career, Cookie,”
