Jonty Rhodes is one of the most popular overseas players in this cricket-obsessed nation. Widely regarded as the finest fielder in the history of the game, Rhodes is idolised in India. Unsurprisingly, he has a good following on social media. Rhodes, on his part, makes sure to remain friendly with the fans.

But on Friday, one fan received a befitting reply from Rhodes after he tried to disrespect the South African. It all began when Rhodes took to Twitter to praise India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja for his fine knock against West Indies in the ongoing Test at Antigua. Just like Rhodes, Jadeja is also known for his fielding and the ex-Proteas star was delighted with the latter’s batting effort.

Love it when a fielder scores valuable runs #topknock @imjadeja #INDvWI,” wrote Jonty Rhodes.

But the fan misinterpreted the tweet from Rhodes and thought that the ex-cricketer was undermining Jadeja’s batting and bowling skills. Reminding Rhodes of his record, the fan tweeted, “Mr @JontyRhodes8 you were known only for fielding.. jadeja known for his bowling batting & fielding obviously…(have you ever achieve any icc ranking in single digit) jadeja achieve test, odi bowling rank no.1 and in top 10 in test since last 3 4 years @imjadeja#INDvsWI ”

Jonty Rhodes’ cool reply

Jonty Rhodes noticed the tweet from the fan and did not mind replying to it. In a classy response, Rhodes made it clear that he was just trying to be funny and asked the fan to take it easy as he wrote, “You too #aramse was trying to be funny – he is GR8 all rounder (get that???)”

Jadeja scored a fine fighting fifty to help India recover from a poor start and post a respectable 297. Apart from Jadeja, Ajinkya Rahane also scored a fifty. In reply, West Indies ended day two on a precarious 189 for 8 with Ishant Sharma taking a five-wicket haul.

Rhodes, meanwhile, recently failed to bag the job of Team India’s fielding coach. He was interviewed by the national selection panel but could not get the lucrative post. The panel decided to retain R Sridhar as the fielding coach.
