India came back strong in the Antigua Test match against the Windies to take a clear advantage by end of the 2nd day. India finished on 297 in their first innings with Ravindra Jadeja batting with the tail-enders and scoring 58. Windies’ innings was a collection of small partnerships as they moved with 174/5 without any fifty-plus stands. At this stage, Ishant Sharma took three wickets in space of seven balls to complete a 5-wicket haul. The hosts were thus reduced to 189/8 by end of the day’s play.

All the statistical highlights during the 2nd day in Antigua which was dominated by India:

Yet another 5-fer in the Caribbean:

3 – Ishant Sharma now has three 5-wicket hauls in Test cricket in the West Indies; the joint-most 5-fers by an Indian in the Caribbean. Ishant is also the first Indian pacer with three 5-wicket hauls in the Caribbean. Spin bowlers Subhash Gupte, Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh have three 5-fers for India in the West Indies.

Bumrah @ 50:

11 – Jasprit Bumrah completed 50 wickets in Test cricket with the wicket of Darren Bravo. He needed only 11 matches for this milestone; the quickest among Indian pacers and the joint 3rd fastest Indian to this feat.

5-wicket haul away from home:

7 – Number of 5-wicket hauls for Ishant Sharma outside Asia in Test cricket. Among Indians, only Kapil Dev (9), BS Chandrasekhar (8) and Anil Kumble (8) have more Test 5-fers outside Asia than Ishant.

8 – Ishant has eight 5-fers in Test cricket outside home; the joint 3rd most for any Indian. Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble took 12 and 10 five-wicket hauls respectively outside India in Test cricket. BS Chandrasekhar and Zaheer Khan also have 8 Test 5-fers away from home.

Hope takes 5-fer behind the stumps:

2014 – Shai Hope is the first Windies keeper with five dismissals in nearly five years in a Test inning. The last Windies keeper to claim five dismissals in a Test innings was Denesh Ramdin in September 2014. Ramdin took 5 catches in Bangladesh’s first innings of the Gros Islet Test.

Rare wickets for Ishant:

2 – Ishant Sharma dismissed Kraigg Brathwaite and Shimron Hetmyer via “caught and bowled”. He is only the 2nd Indian pacer with two c & b wickets in a Test inning. Munaf Patel took the wickets of Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff via “caught & bowled” in his maiden innings with the ball during the 2006 Mohali Test.

2007 – The Last and only instance of Ishant Sharma taking a Test wicket via “c & b” was back in 2007. Danish Kaneria, who was Ishant’s 6th Test wicket, got out handing a return catch to the bowler during the 2007 Bangalore Test. Ishant bagged 261 wickets after that but none of them were via “caught and bowled” until he dismissed Brathwaite on Friday. Interestingly, he got the wicket of Hetmyer in a similar fashion.

In his first-class career, Ishant Sharma picked up 426 wickets prior to this match but only three of those were C & B wickets. He dismissed Orrisa’s Subhranshu Senapati during the 2016/17 Ranji Trophy, the only caught and bowled FC wicket for him between 2007 and 2019.
