Whenever we talk about fielding in cricket there is one man who stands way ahead of others. Jonty Rhodes is to fielding what Don Bradman is to batting. The South African started this trend where saving a run was given as much importance as taking a catch or effecting a run out. Talk about that and he was the best taking those diving catches putting his body on the line or striking the stumps off with direct hits.

What is common in this era is all that Jonty initiated in the early 2000s. After retirement, his biggest assignment was that with the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians. The team roped him in as the fielding coach in 2008 and that gave Jonty an opportunity to impart his knowledge to the younger generation of Indian cricketers and to help them hone their skills.

MI is one team that puts a lot of emphasis on the people forms their support staff. They have the great Sachin Tendulkar as the team mentor, Mahela Jayawardene is the coach, in the past guys like Anil Kumble, Ricky Ponting, Shaun Pollock and Robin Singh among others have constituted their coaching staff.

Jonty had an amazing 9-year stint with Mumbai before he decided to step aside in 2016. He has already moved to India and wanted to focus on his personal business ventures. The South African is pretty famous on Twitter and often hosts Q&A sessions with the fans. In one of the recent occasions, he was asked who among him and Robin is better as a fielding coach at present.

A fan asked him, “Sir who do u think is better btw u & robinsingh as fielders in current domain ? Do u guys put urself to any such challenge at the ground ? Just asking !”

Jonty was as modest as it gets and replied: “Hi Ashwin; I must confess that when Shaun Pollock was head coach of @mipaltan we would have accuracy throwing contests – Robin & Shaun would beat me – probably why I threw myself at the stumps instead of the ball in 1992”
