Prior to Australia’s tour of England, the visitors were dealt with a body blow when Jos Hazlewood, their most experienced bowler in the lineup, was ruled out owing to a back injury. The selectors were prompt to announce his replacement and drafted in all-rounder Michael Neser. The cricketer has had an impressive run in the domestic circuit.

He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the Sheffield Shield tournament having picked up 39 wickets in 10 matches. He was effective in the JLT One Day Cup as well with 8 wickets in 6 contests. The South African born played for the Adelaide Strikers and racked up 13 wickets in 11 encounters. Meanwhile, Justin Langer hinted about his selection in the first ODI at the Kennington Oval.

Langer’s praises for Neser

“My (daughters) love the BBL and they don’t like too many people in the opposition (of the Scorchers), but they like Michael Neser because he smiles all the time. He’s a really good person to have in the team, good competitor and could easily play in the first game,” Langer, the newly appointed head coach of the Australian team, was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“I’ve always seen having that extra bowling option work well in domestic cricket, particularly if your seven and eight can bat a bit, we’ve seen that with Ashton Agar and Michael Neser, they can bat a bit. I think Jhye Richardson has got some talent as well with the bat,” the former Australian batsman added while mentioning Neser’s utility as a cricketer, with both bat and ball.

Australia started their English campaign on an impressive note with a couple of resounding victories over Sussex and Middlesex at Hove and Lord’s respectively. The first ODI will be played on June 10 and the series will continue till June 24. The one-off T20I is scheduled to be staged thereafter in Birmingham.
