GMR group owned IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils did not enjoy a sailing start in their season opener in this year’s edition after losing to KXIP by six wickets. However, they have English cricket icon Kevin Pietersen to thank for showing tremendous support and backing to the team on every little occasion. Pietersen is currently in India as part of the star-studded commentary team brought together to delight the television watchers during this season’s IPL.
And earlier today, the 37-year-old took to his Twitter handle and declared that Delhi Daredevils is his ‘team of choice’ for the ongoing edition. It’s no surprise that the former England international has a soft spot for the side, given that he has spent 5 long years during his time as a cricketer.
Pietersen, who is famous for his innovative switch hit also revealed the reason for his choice. During his stint at the franchise, Pietersen developed a special bond with the founding member of GMR group, Kiran Kumar Gandhi, and said he had the best time at the Delhi camp.

The @DelhiDaredevils are my team of choice for the @IPL.
I’m not saying they’re going to win the IPL, but I’d love them to.Why?
Cos I love the owner and Kiran deserves a trophy & cos I also had my best time at that franchise!

After being involved in the tournament for eight years from 2009 to 2016, Pietersen pulled out of IPL 2017 due to his packed schedule but still flew to India as a commentator during the tournament. He also donned the same role in this season as well. The right-handed batsman however still has one left on his contract with Melbourne Stars.
Delhi has a good prospect in this season
With an incredible squad depth, Delhi after a long time are looking like a thorough outfit. However, it remains to be seen how Ponting brings the best out of the mercurial players such as Maxwell, Roy, Shami and Pant in crunch moments that will give an indication about their character and hunger.
Also, with Gautam Gambhir already having two IPL trophies in his kitty, the left-hander’s addition will be the marquee factor in how their fortunes pan out this season.
