It was a big win for the now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the recent Supreme Court hearing. The defunct franchise has been trying to negotiate terms with the BCCI regarding their fallout from the IPL roster. The franchise has been demanding a payout from the popular cricket board for their removal from the league at a premature contract stage.

The matters between the franchise and the BCCI worsened with time and was dragged to the apex court. Now, the Supreme Court has ordered the BCCI to pay the Kochi Tuskers Kerala a compensation of ₹1,700 crore – the ₹550 crore arbitration tribunal award of 2015 with an interest @18% per annum. As per the recent reports in the Inside Sport, the franchise is seriously considering a negotiation with the BCCI. The amount is certainly a very big one.

Hence, the franchise has planned out to negotiate a reinstatement with the BCCI. As per their plan, the franchise hopes to get back in the IPL. One of the sources in the franchise owner, Rendezvous Sports World, camp, recently remarked that the KTK contract was indeed terminated unlawfully. Hence, they have every right to be reinstated in the tournament roster.

‘Unlawfully terminated’

“We were the legitimate owners of an IPL franchisee. Our contract was terminated unlawfully. The single judge arbitration panel of Honourable Justice RC Lahoti had ruled in our favour. The Supreme Court has now upheld the verdict. This establishes beyond any doubt that we have been the rightful, legitimate owners of an IPL franchisee. We will negotiate to get that right back,” a franchisee partner told Insidesport.co.

“Rendezvous Sports World is a consortium of sports-loving entrepreneurs. We have waited for almost seven years. While we respect the arbitration panel order and the SC verdict, we will approach the BCCI for the restoration of our franchisee for a fee,” the source added.

Meanwhile, the BCCI had maintained their stance on the termination of the Kochi Tuskers Kerala team. They had terminated the team for the franchisee’s inability to furnish a new bank guarantee for 2011. They felt it was an “irremediable breach by the Kochi franchise” and hence, terminated their contract.
