Virat Kohli’s decision to step down as the captain of the Indian T20I side has been the biggest talking point in the world of cricket. Kohli announced on social media that he will give up his captaincy duties in the T20I format after the conclusion of the 2021 T20 World Cup that will be held in the UAE.

And, former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt has opined that Kohli stepping down as the captain of the Indian T20I side will not affect the team adversely. Butt even stated that Kohli has taken a calculated decision.

The 36-year-old Butt further added that Kohli and Rohit Sharma are like the legendary Sri Lankan duo, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Butt even reckoned that there will be no issues in Indian cricket if Rohit Sharma takes over the captaincy of the Indian T20I side from Kohli.

“Kohli has done wonderfully well and India has an able replacement. So Kohli quitting should not adversely affect India in any way. It is a very calculated decision. Kohli and Rohit are like the Jayawardene and Sangakkara of Sri Lanka.

The captaincy switched between them but they worked together and took decisions as one. Similarly, I don’t think there should be any issue if Rohit takes over from Kohli in T20 cricket. They can work well as a team,” said Salman Butt while speaking on his YouTube channel.

Virat Kohli has a good record as captain of the Indian cricket team

Virat Kohli has a good record as the captain of the Indian side in T20I cricket. The 32-year-old has led India in 45 matches, and India has won 27 of those, meaning that Kohli has a win percentage of 65.11 as captain in T20I cricket.

And Rohit Sharma, the man who will most likely take over the captaincy duties of the Indian side from Kohli is the most successful captain in IPL history. The ‘Hitman’ has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) side to an unprecedented 5 IPL titles.

India will play their first match of the 2021 T20 World Cup against Pakistan on 24th October 2021. The T20 World Cup will conclude on 14th November 2021.
