Surrey Stars kick started their KSL 2017 campaign with an 8-wicket win over the Yorkshire Diamonds on Sunday at The Oval. The game was played after the Surrey vs Sussex NatWest T20 Blast game at the venue. The Diamonds, who batted first after winning the toss were bowled out for just 100 and the Stars chased down the target with 15 balls to spare.

Yorkshire Diamonds were reduced to 5/2 by the 3rd over with Marizanne Kapp getting Chamari Atapattu for a duck and Rene Ferrell dismissing the dangerous Sophie Devine for just one run. Suné Luus played a brisk innings to boost the run-rate of the Diamonds. He put on 38 for the 3rd with Lauren Winfield. The Diamonds captain Winfield holed out for 17 trying to play a sweep off Alex Hartley. Luus too departed in the next over top edging to deep fine-leg. She scored 29 off 32 balls with 4 fours.

The previous game’s stars for Yorkshire, Katherine Brunt and Alice Davidson-Richards put on 37 for the 5th wicket in just 5.2 overs and took towards a decent total. But Hartley cleaned up Alice for 13 runs to break the stand. In the same over Brunt got run out trying to retain the strike as the Diamonds collapsed after her wicket. Brunt’s innings of 25 came off just 13 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes. Hartley and captain Natalie Sciver picked up 3 wickets each.

Defending the 100-run total, Brunt struck in her first over to send back Bryony Smith for a duck. However, Tammy Beaumont run-a-ball 21 took them towards the chase before Davidson-Richards cleaned her up in 8th over. Kapp, who got the promotion to bat at No.3, handled the chase very well along with the captain Sciver. The pair put on an unbeaten 67-run stand to take the Surrey Stars to victory in 17.3 overs. Kapp scored an unbeaten 48 off 47 balls with 6 fours while Sciver scored 34 in 32 balls.
