Watch: Kumar Sangakkara’s stunning stumping to dismiss Jimmy Maher: A VB series match between the Aussies and the Islanders played at the Gabba on 15th January, 2003 witnessed an incredibly acrobatic stumping from Kumar Sangakkara. The Australian opener Jimmy Maher tried to dance down the track to spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan and was well beaten by a ball that turned sharply, so much so that Sanga had to stretch towards his extreme left to collect it, losing his balance in doing so.

Managing to hang on to the ball, Sanga, before tumbling flicked the ball with his right hand and found the bull’s-eye! Maher was found well short of his ground much to the delight of the Sri Lankans. A look at his reaction suggests even Sanga himself was astonished by his own agility.

In ODIs he has effected the most number of dismissals (includes wicket-keeping). He has 501 dismissals which include 402 catches and 99 stumpings in 404 ODIs, the latter being a record for most stumpings as a wicket keeper in ODIs. His 482 (353 ct. + 99 st.) dismissals as a wicket keeper is also an ODI world record. He also holds a World Cup record of most number of dismissals, 54 in 25 matches (includes wicket-keeping).

Sangakkara is arguably the greatest cricketer to emerge from the island nation. A top class batsman, an astute captain and one of the finest glovemen ever, Sanga set high standards for himself and his team. Having recently retired from all forms of international cricket, he continues to be an inspiration for all aspiring cricketers around the world.
