The unfortunate ball-tampering fiasco has been hogging the headlines for quite a while now. While there have been several instances of the same, the perpetrators have been spared with a one-match ban or a fine of match fees. However, this time around, the likes of Steve Smith and David Warner have been handed a one-year ban while Cameron Bancroft has received a nine-month suspension.
Meanwhile, following the occurring, cricket boards across the globe would be hoping to churn out strategies to curb the incidents from now onwards. Recently, former Indian cricketer Laxman Sivaramakrishnan has requested to introduce pocket-less trousers for cricketers. The former Indian cricketer interacted with the media and put forward his suggestion.
“Why do you need pockets for?”- Sivaramakrishnan
“I would like to see all cricketers wearing pants without pockets. Why do you need pockets for? Today, the umpires are quite lenient and allow drinks and other stuff as and when the players need it. Therefore, why do you need to carry anything in your pocket when you get the basic needs through the 12th or 13th man,” the former off-spinner was quoted as saying by Times of India (TOI).
In 2013, Sivaramakrishnan was appointed as a player’s representative on the cricket committee of the International Cricket Council. The former cricketer also mentioned about how zips on pockets were not allowed during his stint. “We stopped it during my tenure in the ICC cricket committee. The ICC’s cricket committee will address the issue and set a fine example for the future generation of cricketers,” he added.
The recent debacle has sent shockwaves around the cricket world. Also, this was the first instance when sanctions of such extent were imposed on the players for tampering the leather. For the time being, it will be interesting to find the strategies implied by the cricket boards in order to prune such incidents.
