The coronavirus pandemic has spewed venom even on sporting events across the globe. Even as public gatherings are being put to hold, some games are being played behind closed doors. A number of cricket series have either been postponed or cancelled. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is currently taking place, but the coronavirus has forced a number of foreign players to back out.
The matches are played in front of the empty stands. Peshawar Zalmi, one of the franchises in the PSL, played without their foreign players in their previous league match against Multan Sultans at the National Stadium in Karachi. But despite the wrath of the virus, a few of the foreign players, including Cameron Delport, Ben Dunk, Phillip Salt, Darren Sammy have stayed back.
The Chappell-Hadlee series between New Zealand and Australia was also cancelled after a solitary ODI at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). During the series, fast bowlers Kane Richardson and Lockie Ferguson were quarantined, but their tests for coronavirus came out as negative.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also postponed the cash-rich much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) from March 29 to April 15 as a ‘precautionary measure’ against the deadly coronavirus. The Indian government also cancelled visas except employment and diplomatic ones.
