Threat from Cyclone ‘Maha’ was issued for the SCA Stadium in Rajkot which was due to host the 2nd T20I between India and Bangladesh. Fewer knew that the cyclone weakened only to witness hurricane ‘Rohit Sharma’ smashing life out of the neighbour bowlers. The disappointment of the defeat in the first T20I was clearly telling on Rohit’s face from the start of the game.

Chasing 154 to level the series, Rohit was at his destructive best as he scored 85 off only 43 balls with six fours and as many maximums. Banking on his knock, India cruised to 113/0 by halfway stage and eventually completed an 8-wicket win with 26 balls to spare.

All the major records and numbers Rohit Sharma created on Thursday in the Rajkot T20I:

5+ – Rohit has struck five or more sixes on four instances while leading India in a T20I; the most number of instances for any captain. Aaron Finch, Eoin Morgan and Chris Gayle recorded three such instances each.

6 – Number of fifty-plus scores for Rohit Sharma as captain in the T20I format; the joint-most for an Indian skipper equalling Virat Kohli’s six fifties. Overall, only Faf du Plessis (8) and Kane Williamson (7) have scored more half-centuries as captain in T20Is. All the six 50+ scores of Rohit as captain came in victories and he tops the list in this aspect.

10 – Rohit became the first player in T20I history to be involved in 10 different century partnerships. Four of those were with Shikhar Dhawan for the opening wicket. Prior to this match, Rohit was tied with Suzie Bates (9) in the list of players involved in most 100-run stands in T20Is across Men’s and Women’s cricket.

22 – The 85-run knock by Rohit on Thursday was his 18th half-century in T20I cricket. He already scored four centuries which are the most by any player in this format. Rohit’s 22 scores in excess of 50 runs in T20I format are the joint-most for any player. Virat Kohli has 22 fifties in T20Is but is yet to score a ton.

23 – Rohit completed his fifty in 23 deliveries in this game; the joint-fastest for an Indian skipper not only in T20Is but also in any International format. Rohit, thus equalled his own record as he completed fifty in 23 balls when he raced to a 35-ball hundred against Sri Lanka in the 2017 Indore T20I as well.

37 – Sharma now has struck 37 sixes in only 17 T20I innings while leading the team. These are the most number of T20I sixes by an Indian skipper surpassing MS Dhoni’s 34 maximums. Only five players have hit more T20I sixes as captain than Rohit till date.

79 – Runs Rohit has scored in the first 10 overs of Indian innings; the most runs by any player in a T20I innings for India by end of 10th over. Rohit broke his own record as the 73 runs he scored during his century against Sri Lanka in the 2017 Indore T20I were the previous most.

85 – Rohit’s 85-run knock in this game is the highest individual score while chasing in a T20I by an Indian captain. Sharma, in this process, surpassed Virat Kohli’s 82 during the 2017 Colombo T20I against Sri Lanka. The stand-in skipper now has the top four T20I scores by an Indian captain to his credit.

100 – Rohit Sharma became only the 2nd player to feature in 100 International matches in Men’s T20I cricket. Shoaib Malik leads the list with 111 appearances in this format. For India, only Rohit and Harmanpreet Kaur (100) have featured in over 100 T20Is across Men’s and Women’s cricket.
