New Zealand won the first T20I by 21 runs to take a crucial 0-1 lead in the three-match series. They scored 176 runs while batting first with Daryl Mitchell top-scoring 59* off 30 and opener Devon Conway adding 52 off 35. Washington Sundar took two wickets for 22 but Indian pacers struggled for the wickets with costly spells in Ranchi.
Indian top order struggled for a good start as Kiwi bowlers proved effective in the second innings.
