Preview

After suffering an embarrassing loss in the second ODI, South Africa will meet West Indies in the last game of the three-match ODI series on Tuesday (March 21) at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. The first game of the series was abandoned due to rain, and West Indies earned an unassailable lead in the last game with the help of a superb knock from the newly appointed skipper, Shai Hope.

In the second ODI, West Indies won the toss and elected to bat. The likes of Brandon King and Kyle Mayers provided a steady start to the team, but West Indies lost three wickets in succession by the time the 11th over was completed. Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope provided the right kind of stability to West Indies before Pooran perished for 39 runs in the 24th over. Rovman Powell, who came out to bat next, filled in the void after the previous dismissal and added 80 runs for the fifth wicket. West Indies lost a couple of wickets after reaching the 270-run mark, but Hope remained in the middle. He notched up his 14th century in ODI and finished with 128 runs off 115 deliveries. Hope’s innings helped West Indies post a total of 335 runs for the loss of eight wickets.

In reply, the duo of Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma provided a solid start to the Proteas. They added 76 runs for the first wicket before Kyle Mayers dismissed de Kock for 48 runs. Bavuma stitched partnerships with the next set of batters, and South Africa looked in a strong position. However, they lost the entire middle order for just 38 runs after 200 runs were put on the scoreboard. This hindered South Africa’s chances, and Bavuma’s dismissal in the 42nd over was the last nail in the coffin. South Africa could score only 287 runs and lost the game by 48 runs.
