Former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi has hit back at his former team-mate Danish Kaneria after the latter levelled some serious allegations against him. Kaneria had alleged Afridi of mistreating him during his playing days, branding him a “liar”, “manipulator” and a “characterless person” who did not want Kaneria in the national team. He further alleged that Afridi targeted him for his faith and religious beliefs and forced him to convert to Islam.
Rubbishing those claims, Afridi has said that at that time, he was himself only understanding what religion meant, while adding that Kaneria “was like my younger brother”. Afridi even questioned Kaneria’s intentions, claiming that the accusations are only “to get cheap fame and make money”.
“And the person saying all this, look at his own character,” Afridi was quoted by thenews.com.pk. “Kaneria was like my younger brother and I played with him in the department for many years.”
Afridi questioned why did it take Kaneria so long to admit this if at all it happened. “If my attitude was bad then why he did not complain to the Pakistan Cricket Board or the department he was playing for. He is giving interviews to our enemy country which can incite religious sentiments.”
Shahid Afridi did not want me in Pakistan team: Danish Kaneria
Kaneria had earlier claimed that Afridi did not want him to be a part of the Pakistan team and that he “provoked” other members of the national team against him out of “jealousy”.
“He didn’t want me to be in the team. He was a liar; a manipulator because he’s a characterless person. However, my focus was only on cricket and I used to ignore all these tactics. Shahid Afridi was the only person who would go to other players and provoke them against me. I was performing well and he was jealous of me. I am proud that I played for Pakistan. I was grateful,” Kaneria had said.
A leg-spinner, Kaneria scalped 261 wickets in 61 Tests for Pakistan. He also played 18 ODIs, picking 15 wickets He was banned by the ECB in 2012 over spot-fixing charges in the English County Championship pro-league matches in 2009.
