In the T20 Blast, Birmingham Bears won the game against Notts Outlaws on the last ball of the day. Dan Christian was the bowler as Michael Lumb made a mess of the throw at the non-striker’s end. The total of 158 scored by Notts was chased down by Birmingham. However, the game will be remembered for a different reason altogether.

Luke Fletcher, who is a popular domestic cricketer in England suffered a horrific head injury. It was the fourth over and the first ball of Luke’s over. The ball was hit straight back at him and he hardly had any time to recover from his follow through. It hit straight on his head and Luke went down. It looked horrific and everyone panicked.

The aftermath

After Luke was hit on the head, the umpire’s reaction told the story. They immediately asked for the paramedics and the physio’s of both the teams were on the field. Fletcher hit the ground and stayed there as help arrived soon.

Jake was treated for a bit and then to everyone’s relief he walked off the pitch. The physio had put a towel on his head as he was taken to the hospital immediately. The injury now seems to be fine.

The game was halted for 30 mins as the Notts players left the field. However, it resumed later and the match was completed without any problems. There is a lot of talk about the safety of players and the umpires as the hitting is just getting harder day by day.

The coach speaks

Head coach of Notts Outlaws confirmed that Luke has a concussion. He also revealed that the player will go home today or tomorrow as his teammates cannot wait to see him.

Peter Moores said, “Luke has obviously got a concussion but the reports we’re hearing back are that they think he’s going to be fine and hopefully he will go home either tonight or tomorrow morning. It sounds good news at the moment and we’re looking forward to catching up with him when he’s back and hopefully OK.”

He also thanked the medics and the physios as they did a wonderful job. Moore praised the Warwickshire management as everything was super fast and there was a doctor on the pitch within minutes. He said, “Warwickshire were very understanding and, more importantly, efficient. They had a doctor on site straight away and the paramedics here. Credit too to James Pipe, our physio, he is meticulous in all trauma-related stuff as is Warwickshire’s physio, and they worked together straight away.”
