Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, has always been appreciative of Sanju Samson, who has been in and out of the national team. However, the latter was at the peak of his powers during Rajasthan Royals’ match against Chennai Super Kings at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Batting at number three, the youngster churned out a half-century off a mere 19 balls. He went on to score 74 off 32 balls with the help of one four and as many as nine sixes. He took advantage of the short boundaries in Sharjah and smashed the spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawla, for fun.
Sanju Samson shows his class
He was also involved in a 121-run stand for the second wicket with Steve Smith, the Royals’ captain, who also contributed with a handy 47-ball 69. Samson’s knock again left Gambhir in complete awe. He went on to call him the best young Indian batsman.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Sanju Samson is not just the best wicketkeeper batsmen in India but the best young batsman in India! Anyone up for debate?”

However, Manoj Tiwary, the veteran Bengal cricketer, disagreed with Gambhir. He said that Punjab’s Shubman Gill is the best of the lot as far as young Indian batters are concerned. He replied to Gambhir and wrote, “Best Indian young batsman is @RealShubmanGill Gauti bhai.”

In the meantime, Gill is likely to feature in Kolkata Knight Riders’ opening match against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, September 23 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Back in 2018, the Knights roped in the youngster after the latter’s stellar performance in the U19 World Cup where he became the Player of the Tournament and scored a century against Pakistan in the semis.
His first major knock for KKR came when he scored a fifty against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, taking his team to victory. Last year, he also opened the batting and showed his class. He has also played a couple of ODIs for Team India back in 2019 during the tour of New Zealand, though he couldn’t get big scores.
