Having made a brilliant start to his Test career with India last year, Mayank Agarwal is now hoping to break into the international limited-overs scene as well. Agarwal, 28, has scored 3605 List A runs at an average of 48.71, including 12 hundreds and 14 fifties. In T20s, he has scored 2340 runs at a strike-rate of 130.79, with one century and 15 fifties. These numbers explain why he’d like to don the blue jersey.
If he keeps performing for well for Karnataka in List A cricket, luck may soon favour him in India’s ODI squad as well. In a recent media interaction, Agarwal said that he thinks he can do well in all formats of the game and that it is all about adjusting the game according to each form.
“Obviously the goal is to play for the country in all three formats. I’m looking forward to playing limited-overs cricket for the country whenever the opportunity presents itself. I think I have the game (to succeed across formats). The basic remains the same, whether you’re playing Test cricket, one-day cricket or Twenty20 cricket. You only have to change your game and plan according to the format you are playing and the situation you are put in,” Agarwal said as quoted by Sify.
Consistent performer
In fact, as part of India A tour of England 2018, Mayank Agarwal top scored with 287 runs from four one-day games. He also scored 236 runs in a quadrangular tournament at an average of 59 for India B. Agarwal has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket.
His Test debut was also decent, as he scored an impressive 76 in the first innings and then top-scored with 42 in the second innings. In his second Test, he made 77 before being caught in an attempt to hit a six. It remains to be seen if the selectors give him any space in India’s limited-overs team after the World Cup ends.
