MS Dhoni and Ricky Ponting have many things in common. Both have been excellent with the bat in all the three formats of the game, while as a captain, the duo has won multiple championships including the ICC World Cup. Ponting won the mega ICC event in 2003 and 2007, along with two Champions Trophies as captain of Australia, while Dhoni won the event in 2011, then won the World T20 in 2007 and then ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

Dhoni has also won the Asia Cup in 2010 and 2016 and is the only skipper in the world to win all the major ICC championships. Both the players are regarded as one of the greats of the game and though Ponting retired in 2012, Dhoni’s career is also winding up pretty quickly.

Recently, Michael Hussey was asked to pick the best captain between Dhoni and Ponting and the former Aussie might have definitely found it tough as he played under both of them.

Hussey’s interesting pick

Michael Hussey had made his debut for Australia under Ponting in 2005 and won the 2007 World Cup in West Indies. He then came to India and played six seasons playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) under MS Dhoni, winning the title twice in 2010 and 2011. He was an integral part of the team, opening with Murali Vijay and was appointed as CSK’s batting coach in 2018.

When asked to pick between the two greats as to which was the best captain he played under, Hussey was reluctant at first, but then made a clear-cut choice. “It’s a tough one, well, I will have to say, Ricky. I never played in ODIs with MS Dhoni, so I will go with Ricky,” Hussey was quoted as saying by Times Now.

Michael Hussey is widely regarded as one of the best batsmen to play international cricket. He succeeded Michael Bevan as the finisher in ODIs and T20Is for Australia and though had a short international career, scored 6235 runs in 79 Tests, 5442 runs in 185 ODIs, and 721 runs in 38 T20Is for Australia. He smashed a total of 21 international centuries in his career.
