Former English skipper Michael Vaughan was one of the classiest batsmen during his generation and one thing that never faded away in his game was his flawless technique. That is the exact technical versatility it takes for cricketers to survive and balance their lives between the limited overs and Test cricket.

These days, players are being assigned a role in a particular format and not all of them represent their national side across all three formats. But Vaughan reckons that Jason Roy, one of the ODI specialists in the English unit right now, is fit enough to make it to the Three Lions’ Test side.

Jason Roy has been a consistent performer for England in the ODIs and T20Is and is all set to be an important part of the World Cup squad. To rope him in the Test side at this juncture is an intricate call to take, but considering how the poms have performed in whites in the last couple of years, they certainly need a reliable opener.

“The more you watch Jason Roy bat, the more you feel he should be given a Test match opportunity,” Vaughan tweeted after England’s victory in the 4th ODI at Pallekele.

Here’s what Vaughan tweeted

Cook’s retirement leaves a huge void to fill

Former skipper Alastair Cook was just about hanging in the Test squad despite a string of low scores. The selectors too didn’t consider dropping him as there were no good alternatives available. But his retirement left a huge void for the management to fill and they certainly might be looking at a few of the limited overs specialists.

The likes of Jason Roy and Alex Hales are on the radar, but their ability to stick in the longest format is certainly under the scrutiny. The selectors might have to take a gutsy call with one of these cricketers as the current opening batter Keaton Jennings has not been in good touch and the other option Jonny Bairstow is doing flawlessly well in the middle order.
