The first T20I match between South Africa and Australia took place last night in Johannesburg where Australia registered a record victory against the hosts. Ashton Agar played a match-winning role for the visitors as he joined Brett Lee in the elite club of Australian bowlers to have taken a T20I hat-trick. Agar picked up his maiden five-wicket haul to send the home side packing in the second innings.
Australia had got a chance to bat first in this series opener where some fine batting performances from Aaron Finch and Steve Smith helped Australia post a massive total on the board. Although it was a batsman-friendly wicket, the Australian batsmen showcased their class with a stupendous batting performance in the first innings. Alex Carey and Mitchell Marsh provided the finishing touch to the Aussie innings as they ended the first innings with 196 runs at the loss of 6 wickets.
Dale Steyn was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa with figures of 2/31 in his 4 overs while Tabraiz Shamsi also had the same figures in his 4 overs bowling spell. Chasing a target of 197 runs, South Africa got off a horrendous start as they lost 7 wickets before crossing the 50-runs mark.
Mitchell Starc castles Quinton de Kock with a classic delivery
The reason why South Africa surrendered to the Aussies was that their skipper, Quinton de Kock could not provide them with a solid start at the top. Given that the other batsmen are relatively new to the international arena, De Kock has the onus of giving fiery starts to the Proteas. Unfortunately, that could not happen in Johannesburg last night.
The left-handed batsman faced the first two deliveries of Mitchell Starc and took two runs off them. He was looking for a boundary however, on the very next ball, his stumps were rattled by Starc who bowled an absolute jaffa. This can be billed as the dream delivery of every left-arm fast bowler as De Kock, who is hailed as one of the best T20 batsmen of the world, looked absolutely clueless against that delivery from Starc.
