After another disciplined bowling display by the Indians that ended the South African innings for 258, India had a chance to capitalize on the game with a little less than 300 needed for a win. But the woeful fortunes of India batsmen in the rainbow nation continued as the visitors lost both openers withoutcr too many on the board. Murali Vijay was the first one to go as he was cleaned up by Kagiso Rabada while KL Rahul played an awful shot to throw away his wicket.

Out came Virat Kohli, the centurion for India in their previous innings who shouldered all hopes and was expected do an encore. However, his stay at the crease was short-lived as South African revelation Lungi Ngidi got one to nip back into the right-hander and Kohli was caught right in front. The wicket left India in a precarious situation with their top order sent back to the hut, including marquee batsman and skipper.

Soon after Kohli’s dismissal former India batsman Mohammad Kaif took to Twitter to express his disappointment. The U19 World Cup winning skipper opined that any hope of India winning was shattered since the no.4 batter had to go back to the pavilion. “Unfortunately it’s all over. Kohli gone, India gone,” Kaif tweeted.

Match Details

India were set a target of 287 runs to level the three-match series, having lost the first Test at Newlands, Cape Town by 72 runs. At stumps on Day 4, Cheteshwar Pujara is holding fort along with Parthiv Patel, who was hit by a short ball shortly after he came to the crease as Ngidi generated good pace of the slow wicket in Centurion.

The Men in Blue will have their task cut out in the final day when they come out to bat and with the wicket offering variations, it will be an uphill task for the visitors to achieve the target set by the South Africans. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya will have to play out of their skin if India has to reach anywhere close to that target and overturn their fortunes.
